Dream Theater é uma banda americana de metal progressivo formada em 1985 em Boston, Massachusetts. A banda é composta por John Petrucci (guitarra), John Myung (baixo), Mike Portnoy (bateria), James LaBrie (vocal) e Jordan Rudess (teclados).
O Dream Theater foi formado sob o nome Majesty por Petrucci, Myung e Portnoy – todos nativos de Long Island, Nova York – enquanto eles frequentavam a Berklee College of Music. Eles abandonaram a escola para se concentrarem na banda. Petrucci e Myung foram os únicos dois membros constantes. Portnoy permaneceu até 2010, quando foi substituído por Mike Mangini após decidir sair para buscar outros projetos musicais antes de se juntar novamente ao Dream Theater em outubro de 2023. Após uma breve passagem por Chris Collins, seguido por Charlie Dominici (que foi demitido do Dream Theater não muito tempo depois do lançamento de seu primeiro álbum), LaBrie foi contratado como vocalista da banda em 1991. O primeiro tecladista do Dream Theater, Kevin Moore, deixou a banda após três álbuns e foi substituído por Derek Sherinian em 1995 após um período de turnê. A banda gravou um álbum com Sherinian, que foi substituído pelo atual tecladista Jordan Rudess em 1999.
O lançamento mais vendido da banda é seu segundo álbum Images and Words (1992), que alcançou a posição 61 na parada Billboard 200. Os álbuns Awake (1994) e Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) também entraram nas paradas nas posições 32 e 46, respectivamente, e cada um recebeu aclamação da crítica. Seu quinto álbum, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), foi classificado como número 95 na edição de outubro de 2006 da lista da revista Guitar World dos 100 melhores álbuns de guitarra de todos os tempos. Também foi classificado como o 15º melhor álbum conceitual em março de 2003 pela revista Classic Rock.
Em 2018, o Dream Theater havia vendido mais de 12 milhões de discos em todo o mundo e recebeu três indicações ao Grammy (incluindo uma vitória em 2022). Junto com Queensrÿche e Fates Warning, a banda foi referida como uma das “três grandes” do gênero metal progressivo, responsável por seu desenvolvimento e popularização.
