Anathema é uma banda britânica de rock de Liverpool. Inicialmente faziam um som death/doom e depois partiram para o rock alternativo/progressivo.

A banda foi fundada com o nome de Pagan Angel em 1990 pelos três irmãos Cavanagh, o baterista John Douglas e o cantor Darren White, como uma banda de death/doom. Na época, White era o único cantor da banda. No ano seguinte, Jamie saiu e foi substituído por Duncan Patterson. Sob esta formação, Anathema lançou seu primeiro EP, The Crestfallen (1992), e seu primeiro álbum, Serenades (1993). No entanto, White saiu em 1995; Vincent decidiu atuar como vocalista do Anathema, além de sua função de guitarrista nos álbuns The Silent Enigma (1995) e Eternity (1996), que estavam indo para uma direção mais metal gótico.

Em 1997, John deixou a banda e foi substituído por Shaun Steels pelo álbum Alternative 4 (1998). Patterson e Steels partiram no mesmo ano, substituídos por Dave Pybus e John Douglas, enquanto o ex- tecladista e violinista do My Dying Bride, Martin Powell, também se juntou à banda (Daniel Cavanagh também atuava como único tecladista da banda e compartilhava essa posição desde). O único álbum lançado com este line-up foi Judgment (1999): no mesmo ano, Powell trocou de posição com o tecladista do Cradle of Filth, Les Smith, quem se juntou à Anathema, e Lee Douglas, a irmã de John, foi adicionada ao line-up como vocalista backing/ocasional.

A banda lançou seu sexto álbum, A Fine Day to Exit, em 2001, voltando-se para um som alternativo. Logo após o lançamento, Pybus anunciou sua saída e foi substituído pelo baixista original da banda, Jamie Cavanagh, reunindo os três irmãos da banda pela primeira vez desde 1991. Não havia novos membros pelos próximos dez anos, com os álbuns A Natural Disaster (2003) e We’re Here Because We’re Here (2010) sendo todos gravados e lançados pelo mesmo line-up, com o som se indo cada vez mais rumo ao rock progressivo; No entanto, Daniel Cavanagh deixou o Anathema em 2002 para se juntar à Antimatter, retornando em 2003. Smith deixou o Anathema em 2011, e Vincent e Daniel assumiram a função de tecladista do nono álbum da banda, Weather Systems, em 2012. No mesmo ano, Cardoso, o tecladista ao vivo da banda desde 2011, entrou como membro permanente.

O décimo álbum de estúdio da banda, Distant Satellites, foi lançado em 9 de junho de 2014 via Kscope. Seu décimo primeiro álbum, The Optimist, ganhou o “Álbum do Ano” no Progressive Music Awards 2017.
