Epica é uma banda holandesa de metal sinfônico, fundada por Mark Jansen (ex-guitarrista do After Forever) em Abril de 2002. Utiliza vocais operísticos e gutural, e suas letras possuem um teor geralmente crítico, retratando o amor, o ódio, a agonia, a revolta, a cultura, a ciência, a política, as religiões, a espiritualidade, temas filosóficos e o sentido da vida.
A banda é conhecida pela combinação do heavy metal com elementos clássicos, sinfônicos e amplo uso de orquestras e coros de ópera.
Nascida como uma banda de metal sinfônico com tendências góticas, mais tarde Epica incorpora em seu som fortes influências do death metal. A partir do terceiro álbum, as influências do metal progressivo tornaram-se evidentes. Além disso, a banda usa frequentemente riffs de thrash metal e groove metal, passagens do black metal (principalmente na técnica da bateria), momentos de power metal e referências à música árabe. Algumas canções também apresentam transições de djent e melodias de folk metal derivadas de tradições do oriente médio, chinês e celta. No som da banda, é fundamental o uso do vocal feminino e gutural masculino, interpretados por Simone Simons e Mark Jansen, respectivamente, enquanto escrevem principalmente suas letras, que muitas vezes lidam com temas filosóficos, psicológicos, espirituais, morais, científicos, ambientais, sócio-políticos, globais e pessoais.
Epica executa uma mistura de metal sinfônico, metal progressivo, metal gótico, death metal melódico, thrash metal, black metal sinfônico e, mais raramente, folk metal e power metal. O ex-guitarrista Ad Sluijter havia descrito a banda como “uma ponte entre o power metal e o gothic metal”. A vocalista Simone Simons manifestou sua preferência para o grupo ser descrito como metal sinfônico, embora o fundador do grupo Mark Jansen observa que eles não se importam de ser chamado gothic metal. Mark também havia descrito a banda como “death metal sinfônico” e uma ponte entre o death metal e o metal sinfônico.
A música do Epica é agressiva, bombástica e excessiva, com algumas canções sendo “épicas, grandiosas e majestosas” e outras “mais suaves e introspectivas”. A banda também é conhecida por ter tendências progressivas enquanto uma atmosfera gótica e sentimentalismo também está presente em sua música.
Epica usa uma marca registrada de muitas bandas de metal sinfônico e gótico ao contrastar dois extremos “guturais e brutalidade de um lado, graciosa melodia feminina do outro”. Eduardo Rivadavia da AllMusic observa que a “atração da banda, em última análise depende de explorar os contrastes sonoros de luz e escuridão; a forte intensidade dos riffs pesados de guitarra e hiperativo elenco de bateria contra a crescente doçura em camadas das cordas orquestradas e teclados”. Simone Simons oferece vocais operísticos em uma gama mezzo-soprano, embora ela também ser conhecida por cantar “com uma clara voz alta que tem um tom impecável e muita emoção”. Mas, posteriormente, Simone admitiu que estava errada e que ela não é uma mezzo-soprano, mas uma soprano. Mark Jansen oferece o vocal gutural “que é secundário ao canto da Simone, mas muito importante em termos de equilíbrio e variedade”. O grupo também é conhecido por empregar coros humanos e orquestras em suas músicas, com enfeites adicionais, tais como recitais de palavras faladas e letras em latim e árabe.
