Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (nascido em 30 de março de 1945) é um guitarrista, cantor e compositor de rock e blues inglês. Ele é o único três vezes indicado ao Hall da Fama do Rock and Roll: uma vez como artista solo e separadamente como membro do Yardbirds e do Cream.

Clapton foi referido como um dos guitarristas mais importantes e influentes de todos os tempos. Clapton ficou em segundo lugar na lista da revista Rolling Stone dos “100 Maiores Guitarristas de Todos os Tempos” e quarto na Gibsons “Top 50 guitarristas de todos os tempos”. Ele também foi nomeado número cinco na lista da revista Time de “Os 10 melhores guitarristas” em 2009.

Em meados da década de 1960, Clapton deixou os Yardbirds para tocar com John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Imediatamente após deixar Mayall, Clapton formou o power trio Cream com o baterista Ginger Baker e o baixista Jack Bruce, no qual Clapton tocou improvisações sustentadas de blues e “pop psicodélico artístico baseado no blues”. Depois do Cream terminar, ele formou a banda de blues Blind Faith com Baker, Steve Winwood e Ric Grech. A carreira solo de Clapton começou na década de 1970, onde seu trabalho teve a influência do estilo maduro de JJ Cale e do reggae de Bob Marley. Sua versão de Marley “I Shot the Sheriff” ajudou o reggae a atingir um mercado de massa. Duas de suas gravações mais populares foram “Layla”, gravadas com Derek and the Dominos; e ” Crossroads ” de Robert Johnson, gravado com Cream. Após a morte de seu filho Conor em 1991, a dor de Clapton foi expressa na música “Tears in Heaven”, que apareceu em seu álbum Unplugged.

Clapton foi o destinatário de 18 Grammy Awards, e o Brit Award de Outstanding Contribution to Music. Em 2004, ele foi premiado com um CBE no Palácio de Buckingham por serviços de música. Ele recebeu quatro prêmios Ivor Novello da Academia Britânica de Compositores e Autores, incluindo o Lifetime Achievement Award. Em sua carreira solo, Clapton vendeu mais de 100 milhões de discos em todo o mundo, fazendo dele um dos músicos mais vendidos de todos os tempos. Em 1998, Clapton, um alcoólatra em recuperação e viciado em drogas, fundou o Crossroads Center em Antigua, um centro médico para recuperação de abusadores de substâncias.
