Gentle Giant foi uma banda inglesa de rock progressivo ativa entre 1970 e 1980. A banda era conhecida pela complexidade e sofisticação de sua música e pelas variadas habilidades musicais de seus membros.

Todos os membros da banda, exceto Malcolm Mortimore, eram multi-instrumentistas. Apesar de não serem comercialmente bem-sucedidos, eles conseguiram alcançar a fama de cult.

O objetivo declarado da banda era “expandir as fronteiras da música popular contemporânea com o risco de se tornar muito impopular”, embora essa postura devesse se alterar significativamente com o tempo.

A música do Gentle Giant foi considerada complexa até mesmo pelos padrões do rock progressivo, com base em uma ampla faixa de música, incluindo folk, soul, jazz e música clássica. Ao contrário de muitos de seus contemporâneos do rock progressivo, suas influências “clássicas” iam além dos elementos românticos e incorporados da música de câmara medieval, barroca e modernista. A banda também gostava de temas amplos para suas letras, inspirando-se não apenas em experiências pessoais, mas também na filosofia e nas obras de François Rabelais e R. D. Laing. Em 2015, eles foram reconhecidos com o prêmio de realização vitalícia no Progressive Music Awards.
