Hypocrisy é uma banda sueca de death metal formada em outubro de 1991 em Ludvika, Suécia, por Peter Tägtgren. Musicalmente, a banda começou com um som death metal tradicional em seus primeiros álbuns, mas logo passou para o death metal melódico.
Suas primeiras letras – escritas pelo vocalista original Masse Broberg – tratava-se de temas anti-cristãs e satanismo. No entanto, a banda mais tarde optou por se concentrar em temas como o paranormal e extraterrestres.
Os primeiros lançamentos do Hypocrisy foram ditos como sendo um death metal bem executado, mas foram criticados por não serem particularmente inovadores. Essa crítica diminuiu à medida que a banda amadureceu, cultivando um som mais distinto e empregando uma abordagem lírica introspectiva. Lançamentos posteriores têm um som mais atmosférico, com exploração lírica de alienígenas e experiências de abdução.
A experiência de Tägtgren como produtor também pode ter levado à mudança de direção musical da banda, pois ele está mais envolvido com muitas outras bandas ao produzir seus álbuns.
Seu décimo álbum, Virus , contém temas mais típicos do death metal, como violência, os horrores da realidade, insanidade, tortura, guerra, dependência de drogas e conflitos emocionais. O décimo segundo álbum, intitulado End of Disclosure, trata de temas de conspiração e anti-Illuminati.
