Jethro Tull é uma banda britânica de rock banda formada em Blackpool, Lancashire, em 1967. Tocavam inicialmente blues rock, banda mais tarde desenvolveu seu som para incorporar elementos de hard/folk rock para forjar um rock progressivo assinatura.
A banda é liderada pelo vocalista/flautista/guitarrista Ian Anderson, e contou com uma porta giratória de lineups ao longo dos anos, incluindo membros importantes como os guitarristas Mick Abrahams e Martin Barre, o tecladista John Evan, os bateristas Clive Bunker, Barriemore Barlow e Doane Perry e os baixistas Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond, John Glascock e Dave Pegg.

A influência de Jethro Tull em músicos inclui Steve Harris e Bruce Dickinson do Iron Maiden, Eddie Vedder do Pearl Jam, John Myung do Dream Theater, Marcus Siepen do Blind Guardian, Joe Bonamassa, Jenny Conlee do The Decemberists e a banda de folk/doom metal Blood Ceremony. Nick Cave é fã de Jethro Tull, tendo nomeado um de seus filhos Jethro em homenagem ao grupo. Seu grupo, Grinderman, também cobriu “Locomotive Breath” durante as passagens de som. A pedido do própria Cave, Ian Anderson apresentou-lhe o seu troféu de Álbum do Ano no MOJO Awards em 2008.
Bandas que cobrem canções do Jethro Tull incluem Iron Maiden, que gravou sua própria versão de “Cross Eyed Mary” para o lado B de “The Trooper”. A banda de power metal alemã Helloween cobriu “Locomotive breath” em seu álbum “Metal Jukebox”. A banda finlandesa Turisas gravou “Broadsword”. A banda finlandesa de heavy metal Northern Kings gravou “Fallen on Hard Times”. “Rainbow Blues” foi coberto por Blackmore’s Night, banda do guitarrista do Deep Purple Ritchie Blackmore, em seu álbum de 2003 Ghost of a Rose, em 1972, tocou versões ao vivo “Aqualung” e “Cross Eyed Mary”. Também nos anos setenta, a banda italiana Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) tocou ao vivo uma versão de “My God” e “Bouree”. Na compilação de Stoner Metal Sucking the 70s, há duas covers de músicas de Jethro Tull: “Cross-Eyed Mary” e “Hymn 43”, das bandas Clutch e Alabama Thunderpussy, respectivamente.
