Morbid Angel é uma banda americana de death metal de Tampa, Flórida, formada em 1983 pelo guitarrista e único membro original Trey Azagthoth, o vocalista e baixista Dallas Ward, e o baterista Mike Browning.

Amplamente considerado como uma das bandas mais influentes do gênero e importante na transição do death metal de suas raízes thrash metal, eles foram uma das primeiras bandas a incorporar vocais guturais, blast-beats, várias mudanças de andamento e atmosfera sombria. Eles foram descritos como uma das “bandas mais influentes e emuladas do death metal”, ao lado de Obituary, Death e Cannibal Corpse, e foram citados como influência por muitas bandas posteriores. Eles também foram a primeira banda de death metal a experimentar o sucesso em conexão com a Giant Records em 1992, a rotação pesada de seus videoclipes na MTV, e ter o videoclipe da música “God of Emptiness” mostrado em um episódio de Beavis and Butt-head. Seus primeiros quatro álbuns – Altars of Madness (1989), Blessed Are the Sick (1991), Covenant (1993) e Domination (1995) – são considerados clássicos no gênero.

A revista Decibel também classificou o guitarrista Trey Azagthoth como o “guitarrista de death metal de todos os tempos”. canções da banda são complexas no arranjo, devido às habilidades técnicas consideráveis de Azagthoth bem como do baterista Pete Sandoval, o último dos quais também tocou na banda de grindcore Terrorizer. De acordo com a Nielsen SoundScan, Morbid Angel é a terceira banda de death metal mais vendida nos Estados Unidos (depois de Cannibal Corpse e Deicide) até 2003, com vendas de mais de 445.000 mil, com seu terceiro álbum Covenant sendo o álbum de death metal mais vendido durante o início do tempo da era Soundscan, com mais de 150.000 unidades vendidas.

Os temas líricos originais da banda, quando dirigidos por Vincent (e Azagthoth e Browning, respectivamente) focaram principalmente no satanismo, ocultismo e assuntos anticristãos, mas de Formulas Fatal to the Flesh em diante, através da influência de Azagthoth, a letra mudou para a antiga Suméria, deuses. Muito disso de Simon Necronomicon, que foi influenciado pela mitologia suméria, do autor HP Lovecraft, e fascínio com o Império Romano, e durante o mandato de Steve Tucker eles assumem mais temas anti-religiosos e bárbaros, ou seja, do forte superando os fracos. Seus álbuns são notáveis por serem lançados em ordem alfabética, com o guitarrista Trey Azagthoth comentando que foi uma coincidência em relação aos dois primeiros álbuns, mas que isso foi feito conscientemente desde então.
