Porcupine Tree foi uma banda inglesa de rock formada pelo músico Steven Wilson em 1987. A banda começou essencialmente como um projeto solo para Wilson, que criou toda a música da banda.

No final de 1993, no entanto, ele queria trabalhar em um ambiente de banda, trazendo os freqüentes colaboradores Richard Barbieri como tecladista, Colin Edwin como baixista e Chris Maitland como baterista para formar a primeira formação permanente. Com Wilson como vocalista e guitarrista, este permaneceu no lineup até fevereiro de 2002, quando Maitland deixou a banda e Gavin Harrison foi recrutado para substituí-lo.

O som no início do Porcupine Tree evocava um estilo de rock psicodélico comparável à de rock progressivo da banda Pink Floyd. Ao assinar com a gravadora Kscope no final dos anos 90, a banda se aproximou de um som de rock alternativo mais mainstream. No início dos anos 2000, a banda assinou com uma grande gravadora e mudou seu som novamente, desta vez em uma direção de som mais pra metal progressivo.

Após o lançamento e a turnê de apoio ao seu décimo álbum de estúdio, The Incident, seu maior sucesso comercial até hoje, a banda se tornou inativa quando Wilson se comprometeu com seu trabalho solo, e outros membros começaram a trabalhar em seus próprios projetos separados. Em 2018, após anos de indeterminação, Wilson descartou uma possível reforma.

Durante uma carreira de mais de 20 anos, Porcupine Tree ganhou aclamação da crítica e colegas músicos, desenvolveu um culto de seguidores e tornou-se uma influência para novos artistas. No entanto, seu trabalho ficou longe da música mainstream, sendo descrito por publicações como Classic Rock e PopMatters como “a banda mais importante que você nunca ouviu falar.”
