Thin Lizzy é uma banda de hard rock formada em Dublin, Irlanda, em 1969. Dois dos membros fundadores, o baterista Brian Downey e o baixista Phil Lynott, se conheceram ainda na escola.
Lynott liderou o grupo ao longo de sua carreira de gravação de doze álbuns de estúdio, escrevendo a maior parte do material. Os singles “Whiskey in the Jar” (uma balada irlandesa tradicional), “Jailbreak” e “The Boys Are Back in Town” foram grandes sucessos internacionais.
Após a morte de Lynott em 1986, várias encarnações da banda surgiram ao longo dos anos, inicialmente baseadas nos guitarristas Scott Gorham e John Sykes, embora Sykes tenha deixado a banda em 2009. Gorham depois continuou com uma nova formação incluindo Downey.
Lynott, líder de fato do Thin Lizzy, foi compositor e co-compositor de quase todas as canções da banda, e o primeiro irlandês negro a alcançar sucesso comercial no campo do rock. Thin Lizzy contou com vários guitarristas aclamados pela crítica ao longo da sua história, com Downey e Lynott com a seção rítmica, na bateria e baixo. Além de serem multirraciais, a banda atraiu seus membros não apenas dos dois lados da fronteira irlandesa, mas também da comunidade católica e protestante durante o The Troubles. Sua música reflete uma ampla gama de influências, incluindo blues, soul music, rock psicodélico e música folclórica tradicional irlandesa, mas geralmente é classificado como hard rock ou às vezes heavy metal. A revista Rolling Stone descreve a banda como um hard rock distinto, “bem distante do pacote de metal da década de 70”.
Van Morrison, Jeff Beck e Jimi Hendrix foram grandes influências durante os primeiros dias da banda, e influências posteriores incluíram as pioneiras guitarras gêmeas encontradas em Wishbone Ash e os artistas americanos Little Feat e Bob Seger.
Em 2012, Gorham e Downey decidiram não gravar material novo como Thin Lizzy, então uma nova banda, Black Star Riders, foi formada para turnê e produzir novos lançamentos, com o álbum de estréia All Hell Breaks Loose. Thin Lizzy planeja se reunir para ocasionais shows.
