Within Temptation é uma banda holandesa de metal sinfônico fundada em abril de 1996 pela vocalista Sharon den Adel e pelo guitarrista Robert Westerholt. Eles sempre foram classificados pelos críticos como metal gótico , embora a influência “gótica” varie com cada álbum.

Seu som mais proeminente e conhecido é descrito como metal sinfônico, embora seu material anterior, como o álbum de estréia Enter, fosse em sua maioria metal gótico, com Enter também tendo um som doom metal. Em uma entrevista, den Adel disse que eles caíram em um gênero de rock sinfônico com várias influências. Em uma entrevista posterior com a plataforma de música holandesa 3VOOR12, den Adel afirmou que “nós nos consideramos mais uma banda de rock sinfônico… na minha opinião, não somos uma banda gótica”.

Após o lançamento de seu álbum de estréia, Enter, em 1997, a banda se tornou proeminente na cena underground holandesa. Até 2001 onde eles se tornaram conhecidos pelo público em geral, com o single “Ice Queen” do seu segundo álbum, Mother Earth, que alcançou a segunda posição nas paradas holandesas. Seguiu-se a banda que venceu o Conamus Exportprijs, um prêmio de música holandesa, quatro anos seguidos, e um quinto em 2016. Seus próximos álbuns The Silent Force (2004) e The Heart of Everything (2007) estrearam em primeiro lugar nas paradas holandesas. Em 2008, eles lançaram um DVD e CD ao vivo, Black Symphony, gravado com a Orquestra Metropole. Isto foi seguido em 2009 por An Acoustic Night no Theatre, outro álbum ao vivo.

O quinto álbum de estúdio da banda, The Unforgiving , foi lançado em março de 2011, juntamente com uma série de quadrinhos e uma série de curtas que juntos envolvem uma história. O primeiro single, “Faster”, foi lançado em 21 de janeiro, e o primeiro curta-metragem, Mother Maiden, foi lançado em 31 de janeiro. A banda já vendeu mais de 3,5 milhões de cópias do álbum em todo o mundo.

Seu sexto álbum de estúdio, Hydra, foi lançado no início de 2014 no Japão, na Europa e nos Estados Unidos. O álbum conta com participações de vários artistas: a cantora finlandesa Tarja Turunen, que aparece no primeiro single “Paradise (What About Us?)”; Howard Jones, ex-vocalista da banda americana de metalcore Killswitch Engage; Dave Pirner, vocalista da banda americana de rock alternativo Soul Asylum; e o rapper americano Xzibit. A banda fez um extenso airplay na BBC Radio 2 no Reino Unido com uma das músicas do álbum, “Whole World Is Watching”, com Pirner.
